Virtually all modern vehicles are fitted with an Engine Control Unit, or ECU, which determines various limitations such as power, torque, reliability, and fuel emissions. Often finely balanced, the controls can provide different parameters from vehicle to vehicle, even when they have the same specification engine.

As a general example, an entry-level ‘standard’ model vehicle with excellent fuel consumption could share an identical factory engine with its sister ‘sport’ model, which enjoys excellent performance. The balancing aspects are determined by the ECU which means that, typically, superior fuel economy is likely to compromise performance, and vice versa. These factors are called ‘maps’.

The simplest form of stage one engine tuning is called Remapping and is often applied to vehicles with a turbocharger controlled by an ECU.
